Scott Momaday's memoir "The Names"

Published in 1976, it is a fine book about Momaday's family and his school years in Jemez/New Mexico. The family goes back till the strong woman Kau-au-ointy which was a slave kidnapped by Kiowas and married into the tribe. The book is ending with the coming out of the Kiowa - the Kwuda - out of a hollow log: Leaving his childhood and youth, Momaday touches the log which is still to see under a thin ice crust, which means the past.
