Millionaire oncologist Dr. Michael Reynolds (Woody Harrelson) is living a life of luxury in Los Angeles when he is assigned to young cancer patient Brandon Monroe (Jon Seda), a violent former gang member with nothing but contempt for the doctor. Monroe, who is part Cherokee, gets hold of a gun, kidnaps Reynolds and forces him to go to an Arizona reservation, where he thinks a lake's healing powers will cure him. Their journey is fraught with danger but leads to insights for both men.
