This is why ancient Lakota people called this area "Unci Maka Tacante", the Heart of Grandmother Earth. It is also known as "The heart of everything that is". This is Lakota Holy Land. If you look carefully, you can see what looks like a red path around this heart. This is known as the racetrack. Animals raced around here four times to decide the fate of the two-leggeds. As they were racing, their hooves broke open and many died on this path. This is why it's red. Because we are still here, we have a responsibility to all of creation to care for it. But before we can do that, we must be responsible to ourselves by coming to peace within ourselves. Then we can be at peace with everything around us. In otherwords, before we can be at peace with the relatives throughout the universe around us, we must first be at peace with the relatives in the universe within us. This is the Lakota Star Knowledge definition of "Mitakuye Oyas'in". Hau, Mitakuyepi, hecetuwelo! That is the way it is.
