The name signifies one who was so capable in battle that even the sight of his horse inspired fear. This Oglala Sioux Chief fought in Red Cloud's War and went on to become the first President of the Pine Ridge Indian Council in 1883.
His main concern was helping his people to adjust to reservation life and he made visits to Washington to try to improve conditions after the Wounded Knee Massacre.
He died in 1900 at the age of 64 and is buried in the Makasan Presbyterian Cemetery.
