So named because in a skirmish during heavy rain his face became streaked with paint (or perhaps his enemy's blood) he was born in 1835, a member of the Hunkpapa Lakota.
He participated in raids at Fort Totten and Fort Phil Kearny and the Battle of Honsinger Bluff where he killed an army veterinarian. On George Custer's orders he was captured by Thomas Custer and held in Fort Abraham Lincoln.
He managed to escape and joined Sitting Bull's band. After the Battle at Little Big Horn he lived in exile in Canada prior to surrendering in 1880 and being transferred to the Standing Rock Agency.
He died in 1905 and is buried in the Aberdeen cemetery in Brown County.
Who better to tell more of his story than the man himself, as told to and recorded by Ohiyesa (Charles Alexander Eastman) in his final days: indigenouspeople.net
